Smart Sustainable Cities

Jane McLaughlin and Ed Synnott were two of three executive partners in delivering the inaugural Smart Sustainable Cities Initiative 2018 for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The project was commissioned in late November 2017 and required the delivery of two deeply interactive workshop tours in Bristol and London, across 8 sub-themes under respective smart and sustainable city focuses. The aim of the initiative was to exchange knowledge and build an ongoing knowledge exchange base for UK and EU city representatives for best and leading edge practice in smart sustainable cities.

Some 50 EU city representatives and 12 UK cities were involved with a careful selection of 24 UK SME innovator businesses and a range of institutions including several UK Catapults.

We designed and delivered the strategic, communications and tour-based elements for the workshop tours including the business and city engagement strategy, agendas, brand, logo, website, and securing high-profile speakers and tour locations (just 4 months after commission).

We created an online outward facing portal for the initiative (www.smartsustainablecities.uk) that hosts participant city case studies, a #slack channel for ongoing communication and file sharing, and a LinkedIn Group for ongoing discussions and networking. We raised the profile of the initiative with an intense, yet purely organic, Twitter campaign.
